So you think you want to be a firefighter? Let’s be real: most people don’t have what it takes.
This isn’t a shift job. It’s a lifestyle that owns your nights, weekends, and holidays. You’ll miss family dinners, anniversaries, and a lot of sleep. You’ll sweat through your gear in summer heat and freeze your face off in sub-zero winters. You’ll crawl into black smoke so thick you can’t see your own hands and carry weight that feels impossible. The fire doesn’t care if you’re tired, scared, or hurting. It just wants to win.
And now, we’re not just fire. Dickinson Fire is an ALS provider. That means when we’re not dragging hose or cutting cars apart, we’re bringing critical care to heart attacks, overdoses, strokes, pediatric calls, and everything in between. One call might be pulling a victim from a fire, the next could be bringing someone back from cardiac arrest in their living room. The weight is the same: if you mess up, someone pays the price.
Our standards are high. Training is relentless. The expectations are unforgiving. We don’t lower the bar to make people feel comfortable. We raise it, and then we raise it again.
But if you can embrace the grind, if you can face fire and chaos head-on, if you can carry the responsibility of both fire and EMS without flinching, you’ll find something here that can’t be matched. Brotherhood. Sisterhood. A family built on sweat and sacrifice. A tradition that started in 1891 and refuses to quit.
This isn’t easy. It isn’t safe. It isn’t for everyone.
It’s fire. It’s EMS. It’s service.
Still think you have what it takes....
